Smith and Labuchagne back in form as a display of dominance by the Aussies on day 1
In the second and the last test match of the series against Sri Lanka, Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. Aussies did not make any change in their playing 11 but Sri Lanka made lot of changes because of corona hit and three Sri Lankan players Maheesh Theekshana, Kamindu Mendis and Prabath Jayasuriya made there debut in this match.
Aussies did not start well as Warner departed after scoring only 5 runs before the 50-run stand between Khawaja and Labuchagne. Australia lost their second wicket on 70 when Ramesh Mendis took wicket of Khawaja but after that, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuchagne played incredible knocks. Marnus hit his first overseas ton and made an impressive partnership with Smith before getting out on 104. After taking his wicket, Prabath Jayasuriya took another two wickets and Sri Lanka made a comeback but then, Alex Carey stayed with Smith till the end of the day. Smith has scored 109 runs(his 1st century after January 2021) and Carey is unbeaten on 16.
Smith hit his 28th test century and ended his century drought, he played beautifully and hit 14 boundaries on day 1. Sri Lankan fielders were not really good, Niroshan Dickwella missed couple of chances of stumping from which, one chance was of Labuchagne which later became costly for Sri Lanka. On day 2,the visitors would look to make a big total in first innings wheras the home team will try to stop Australia around 350.
